IMPROVED INDOOR AIR QUALITY FOR HEALTH: A DONATION OF AIR PURIFIERS ASSISTS AT PHYSICAL REHABILITATION CENTER

Stockholm, Sweden 6 July 2022 - A donation of air purifiers to Mälargården Rehab Center during CamfilCaring 2022 showed that the number of harmful air particles per square meter in the air, inside of the commonly shared room could be reduced by 43% in just 45 minutes. This is an important contribution to the patients rehabilitation journey.

Minimising the number of harmful particles in the indoor air is a simple way to protect people’s health. This is even more essential at facilities like Mälargården Rehab Center, where patients come to be rehabilitated from cancer, MS, Parkinson’s, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other illnesses.

Mälargården Rehab Center is located in the countryside north of the Swedish capital Stockholm, away from heavy traffic pollution, surrounded by forests and lakes - which means that the air outside is considered to be of good quality.

The donation of two City M air purifiers to Mälargården Rehab Center is part of Camfil’s CamfilCairing programme, in which we as a company and all our colleagues focus on community outreach and CSR activities. This year’s theme is Clean Air Everywhere. The idea is to give back to local communities around the world where Camfil has operations, by donating time, expertise and products. ”With this year’s theme, Clean Air Everywhere, we want to help our local communities by improving their indoor air quality. We believe that clean air should be a human right, and of course in a facility like Mälargården clean air is essential. ”, says Eva Bergenheim Holmberg, Executive Vice President Human Resources and Internal Communication at Camfil.

Sharing of expertise

Part of the donation initiative is also the sharing of Camfil’s expertise around clean air solutions. To carry out the donation, Camfil sent a three-person expert team to Mälargården Rehab Center.

They measured the outdoor air and the indoor air. They examined the ventilation system, which is equipped with Camfil air filters. And even though they found that the outdoor countryside air and the indoor air were of good quality, there was still room for further improvement. Camfil’s team conducted a test by placing one of the two City M air purifiers in a common room. After 45 minutes, the number of particles in the air had been reduced from three and a half million to two million per square meter, a 43% reduction.

The process included some crucial activities, for example where Camfil’s expert team examined the ventilation system at Mälargården Rehab Center.

Good air quality is a crucial contributor to rehabilitation

”Clean air is vital for our patients’ rehabilitation. Especially when it comes to physical exercise. It’s all about oxygenating the muscles”, says Björn Bildsten, Operations Manager at Mälargården. ”We have patients who have poor oxygenation and because of that some of them are afraid to start physical training. Even though we monitor their oxygen saturation, it is also reassuring for them to know that they are breathing quality clean air.”

”For our asthma patients, the air quality is crucial. Harmful particles in the indoor air can cause infections in the respiratory mucous membrane. Therefore, clean air is crucial. And it is of course beneficial for patients not suffering from asthma or allergies”, says Lotta Engblom Andersson , who is an asthma and COPD nurse at Mälargården.

Mälargården’s Operations Manager Björn Bildsten points out that the Camfil donation benefits both staff and patients, and that the effects of the City M air purifiers have been perhaps most evident for their patients with COPD, asthma and allergies. ”These patients are the ones that have really ‘opened our eyes’ so to say, to the importance of clean indoor air.”
